In thrilling news for wrestling and jorts fans alike, John Cena just made his surprise return to WWE Raw. After an emotional entrance and reunion, he wasted no time in landing verbal blows on the current US Champion before challenging him for his belt.
The legendary wrestler turned Hollywood A-lister announced a surprise return to WWE Raw over the weekend, having just wrapped filming for his new R-comedy Ricky Stanicky in Melbourne. Rumours surrounding Cena’s return to WWE have been rife over the last few weeks, but fans thought he probably wouldn’t make it to WWE Raw thanks to his filming commitments in Australia.
The sixteen-time former world champion last appeared on SmackDown in late December, teaming up with Kevin Owens in a one-off tag team against Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. Prior to that, Cena hadn’t been seen at, or competed in, WWE since his 2021 “Summer of Cena” tour that culminated in SummerSlam in Vegas and a dark match at Madison Square Gardens.
Since then, Cena has stepped back from his wrestling career to focus on film work, but has always insisted that he has not – and does not plan – to retire from wrestling, saying to Chris Hardwick in 2021 that “If physically, I’m slower, I’ve said openly to everyone that I will keep doing this until I feel I’m offending the customer”.
True to his word, his return to WWE this week in Boston began with an emotional entrance that saw the wrestling legend stop in stunned silence as the arena erupted on his arrival. He then had a similarly emotional reunion with fellow wrestling veteran Cody Rhodes. The pair embraced ringside before raising arms together and holding a long handshake.

The niceties were short-lived, however. Before long, Cena had turned his attention to the current US Champion Austin Theory. The pair entered the ring and were exchanging verbal blows in a matter of seconds.
In response to Theory’s suggestion that Cena was going bald, Cena was quick to snap back that he’d “rather be bald than have [producers] pump in fake crowd noises for my matches because nobody cares”.
After an unintelligible response from Theory, Cena was fast on the following up: “Dude, I can go buy some Topic, but you still suck”.
Once the pair were suitably riled up, Cena challenged Theory for the US Championship title, which is set to take place at WrestleMania 39 on the weekend of 1st-2nd April in Inglewood, California.“At #WrestleMania, for the #USTitle, it’s gonna be @_Theory1 vs. @JohnCena!”#WWERaw pic.twitter.com/NVaYwCUbEo

WrestleMania 39 is also set to host a highly-anticipated fight between Seth Rollins and Logan Paul, who’s looking to restore the family name after his brother’s loss to Tommy Fury last week.
