With the release of Succession season four only weeks away, speculation has arisen that this upcoming season may be the last for the acclaimed HBO TV series.
During an interview with GQ, Succession actor Jeremy Strong was asked whether season four could potentially be the last, and what it will mean to say goodbye to the character of Kendall Roy, the tortured heir apparent to Logan Roy who is the head of media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo.
“It will feel like a death, in a way,” said Strong, who has inhabited the role of Kendall for the last five years, winning an Emmy and Golden Globe award in the process. Strong would also go on to confess a level of envy towards his peers who, during Strong’s time on Succession, were able to play a variety of roles and have “that freedom to just shoot yourself out of some different cannons. Sometimes Kendall feels like the same cannon over and over again.”

A day after Strong’s comments, HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloy said that there are no plans to create a Succession spinoff either, stating in an interview with Variety: “I always say ‘never say never’… it doesn’t seem to me that there’s something in Succession where you would go, ‘Let’s follow just this kid’ or whatever. It doesn’t seem like a natural thing to me. But if (creator Jesse Armstrong) said I want to do this, then I would follow Jesse’s lead.”
Succession follows the Roy family, who are the owners and executives of Waystar RoyCo, a media conglomerate that is incredibly influential in the worlds of business and politics. When the family patriarch and CEO, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) has a severe heart attack, his children Connor (Alan Ruck), Kendall (Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) position themselves for the head of the table.
Succession has proven to be a huge success for HBO, receiving overwhelming acclaim for its writing and performances, and winning numerous awards.
