The iPhone 14 series of smartphones is expected to be unveiled next month, in September. And so, as is the case every year, rumours have been swirling around the web regarding what the iPhone 14 will look like, what it will be called and what features it will have.
We’re big fans of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, which are easily some of the best smartphones you can currently buy, so Apple may actually have a tough time bettering them.
While Apple could now be seen as lacking some innovation when it comes to new iPhone launches, the iPhone 14, in its various sizes and guises, will no doubt sell in the millions. But, what features will it have, when will it be released in Australia, how will it improve over the iPhone 13 and perhaps most important of all, how much will it cost?
We’ve scoured the web to find the best and more reliable leaks and rumours so you can start getting an idea as to what the iPhone 14 will look and function like as soon as it drops.

iPhone 14 Australia: Release Date

While the release date of the iPhone 14 in Australia won’t be certain until Apple sends out its official invites (the company has yet to even confirm the existence of the device itself), there have been enough iPhone launches now that we take a fairly logical guess as to when it will be released.
Update 23rd August 2022
Contrary to previous reports (mentioned below) the latest rumours indicate Apple will now hold its virtual iPhone 14 launch event on Wednesday 7th September 2022, as opposed to the previously suggested date of 6th September.
This latest prediction comes from Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, and has been backed up other notable Apple tipsters including Ming-Chi Kuo. The 7th September date has been suggested because it gives Apple a one day buffer following Labor Day in the US, which occurs on the 5th September.
Update: 10th August 2022
A tweet posted by Max Weinbach, who has a good track record when it comes to Apple rumours, suggests the iPhone 14 will actually be unveiled on the 6th of September before going on sale from the 16th. The comments in the response section certainly take Max’s prediction with a hefty pinch of salt.

The 6th of September date could well prove to be true, however, as Apple is unlikely to host an in-person event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, owing to the continuation of the Covid pandemic. Were it to be an in-person event on the 6th September, Apple would need to fly the media in the day before, but this year, Monday the 5th of September is Labor Day, a national public holiday.
It’s highly unlikely that would have been possible, but since it will be a virtual event, there’s no reason to say Apple can’t or won’t reveal the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max on the 6th of September.

Apple tends to hold its iPhone launch event in September and most commonly on a Tuesday. From this, we can take a guess and speculate the iPhone 14 will be unveiled on September 13th 2022.
This speculative guess has been all but confirmed by tipster iHacktu ileaks, who has a good track record with Apple rumours. The Twitter tipster has said Apple’s iPhone launch event will take place on September 13th 2022. While we of course have to still take this with a pinch of salt, we’d be surprised if Apple chose any other date.

As for the date the iPhone 14 will be on sale, we can again turn to previous years.
With previous launches, the iPhone has gone on sale 11 days after it has been unveiled. But, if the iPhone 14 is unveiled on Tuesday 13th September, 11 days after this will be Saturday the 24th. Because Apple is highly unlikely to launch the iPhone officially on a Saturday, we can logically assume the iPhone 14 and all its variations, will be available to buy from Friday 23rd September 2002.

For the previous two previous generations of iPhone, Apple has gone with the same naming convention: iPhone 12/13, iPhone 12/13 Mini, iPhone 12/13 Pro and iPhone 12/13 Pro Max. However, for the iPhone 14, that is expected to change slightly. Indeed, Mark Gurman, an analyst at Bloomberg and someone with a reliable track record for Apple rumours, has said the iPhone 14 Mini will be discontinued.
Gurman’s prediction has been backed up by several other notable analysts and has been all but confirmed by Omdia, which recently reported on the supply chain of the iPhone 14.
The vast majority of recent rumours have all pointed towards a new naming convention for the iPhone 14. All have agreed there will be four models of iPhone 14 and that they would be called iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Ditching the poorly performing Mini model in favour of a larger ‘basic’ model would certainly be more attractive to customers who aren’t able to spend the big dollars on the large-screened iPhone Pro Max. However, the report from Omdia throws a new name into the mix: iPhone 14 Plus.
The publication has posted what is believed to be a genuine supply chain report for the iPhone 14 and it shows the names as being, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will be relatively similar in size, while the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max will arrive as the two larger-screened devices. The supply chain report also shows that iPhone models released in 2024 will receive an under-the-screen FaceID camera and a pinhole cutout for the selfie camera, which would finally omit the notch that has been in place on the iPhone since the iPhone X.

Screen Sizes
iPhone 14 is expected to follow a similar design language to the recent generations of iPhone, in that it should feature straight edges in favour of the more rounded edges last seen on the iPhone X. It’s also safe to assume we will see some new colour options introduced.
Screen sizes for the upcoming iPhone 14 series have also been suggested, they are as follows:
- iPhone 14 – 6.1-inch display
- iPhone 14 Max – 6.7-inch display
- iPhone 14 Pro – 6.1-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – 6.7-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate
However, as per Omdia’s supply chain report, the new iPhone 14 models will have the following names and sizes:
- iPhone 14 – 6.06-inch display
- iPhone 14 Pro – 6.12-inch display
- iPhone 14 Plus – 6.68-inch display
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – 6.69-inch display
So basically, it’s anyone’s guess at the moment with regard to what the iPhone 14 series will actually be called and what screen sizes we can expect to see.
More recently, 9to5Mac (via Forbes) has done some digging into the iOS 16 beta (the software that runs on the iPhone) before its official launch alongside the iPhone 14. They found a ‘Sleep’ state for the display which, when activated, darkens the display so that it remains ‘Always On’.
An Always On display can already be found on the Apple Watch, and it essentially allows you still view the time and other widgets without having to physically turn the screen back on. The Always On display on could work in a slightly different way to the Apple Watch and Android smartphones that already have this feature, thanks to how wallpapers work in iOS 16.
Rather than the whole screen going black with just essential information displayed, on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the wallpaper will simply darken and tint because it is made up of several ‘layers’.
“This means that users will still see their wallpapers in some way even when the screen is turned off. The wallpaper will be displayed at full brightness once the user taps the screen or presses the Power button,” 9to5Mac states.
It’s also important to note that this feature will only apply to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max/Plus, because they will get screens with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s not yet clear if the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will get this feature too, seeing as they also have screens with a variable refresh rate.
Camera Assembly
Update 23rd August 2022
CNET cites an April tweet from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo as saying the front-facing iPhone camera will receive its biggest update since 2019, by getting a larger f/1.9 aperture and autofocus, which should result in better night-time photos.

Other areas where the iPhone 14 design could differ from previous iPhones lie in the front-facing camera and rear camera assembly. Korean website The Elec has said, rather confidently, that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (the two more expensive iPhone models) will feature a punch-hole front-facing camera, i.e. one without a ‘notch’ at all.
If true, this will increase the amount of screen real estate and make the front-facing FaceID camera far less obtrusive. Apple did reduce the size of the notch when it launched the iPhone 13 series, although failed to make use of the extra screen display area.
It’s also been reported that the rear camera assembly, which currently sticks out a fair way from the rear of the iPhone 13, could be reduced drastically so that the cameras sit flush with the rear panel (something Samsung managed to achieve with its Galaxy S22 Ultra).

Supply Issues?
According to a tweet posted by display analyst Ross Young (via Gizmodo) suggests the iPhone 14 Max (or iPhone 14 Pro) is currently a victim of supply issues. He claims the screens used for the iPhone 14 Max model specifically are “still way behind through August.”
Suggesting that the original naming and screen-size line-up suggested is true, Young says the similarly-sized iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max will use different screens. The Pro Max will utilise Apple’s ProMotion adaptive refresh technology, implying it will have a screen refresh rate of 120Hz. The iPhone 14 Max, meanwhile, will get a 60Hz screen instead.
Overall Design
Of course, in the world of iPhone 14 rumours and leaks, you can’t completely trust everything you read. Contrary to what is mentioned above, Max Weinbach, a man who has been correct with iPhone leaks in the past, has laid his hands on what are allegedly schematics (via 9to5Mac) for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models.

These drawings show the iPhone 14 Pro models are actually a little thicker in size compared to the iPhone 13 models they will replace. His findings confirm the hole punch front-facing camera design mentioned above, but they also show a second, pill-shaped cut out too, most likely for other sensors involved in FaceID biometric technology.
What the schematic drawings also show, however, is the rear camera on the iPhone 14 Pro models extending well beyond the rear case, seemingly in contradiction to the idea the rear camera assembly will sit flush with the back panel. This could just be a feature on iPhone 14 Pro models and not the standard phones.
On the 28th April 2022, a fresh leak of the iPhone 14 design was published to Twitter via @SaranByte. The image comes via Chinese social media website Weibo and shows what are alleged to be the four front panels of the four new iPhone 14 models.

The iPhone models are named iPhone 14; iPhone 14 Pro; iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which ties in with a previous rumour suggested by Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman.
The front panels of the iPhone 14 models show the two non-Pro models receiving the current pill-shaped cutout at the top of the panel. The two iPhone 14 Pro models, however, appear to receive a slightly less intrusive front camera cutout – what has been dubbed a ‘punch hole’ cutout. The pill-shaped cutout next to this punch hole will likely house other sensors used for features such as FaceID.
Of course, this is still just rumour, for now, so take it with a pinch of salt. However, considering this image leak tallies up with other leaks and rumours, this could be our best look at the iPhone 14 so far.
iPhone 14 Australia: Camera
The majority of Apple iPhones excel in many areas, but one of particular mention is the camera department. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are easily some of the best smartphones for taking photos, especially in low-light, so we fully expect the iPhone 14 series (especially the Pro models) to improve upon this even further.
Both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series are expected to retain the same number of camera lenses as the models they replace; two for the ‘regular’ iPhone 14 models and three for the iPhone 14 Pro models. Where they should improve, however, is in the specifications department.
Often-reliable leaker of Apple news, Ming-Chi Kuo, suggests the iPhone 14 Pro models will get a new 48-megapixel main camera sensor, trumping the 12-megapixel main sensor currently found in the iPhone 13 Pro models. He also says that all four iPhone 14 models will have the ability to record video in 8K resolution, which would mark the first time it has been available on the Apple iPhone.
Going along with the schematic drawings mentioned above, which shows a rather prominent rear camera bump, Kuo has tweeted in agreement this will be the case. The reason? The 48-megapixel camera sensor is physically larger in size, so the larger rear camera bump is necessary to accommodate it.
iPhone 14 Australia: Price
Apple products can never truly be classed as ‘affordable’, although the mid-range iPhone SE is one of the most affordable Apple products out there, not to mention one of the best smartphones you can buy. So, how much can you expect to pay for the iPhone 14 in Australia?
Well, at the moment, we have no idea. No information has been leaked or suggested, unfortunately, so for now, all we have to go off is the starting price of the current iPhone 13 models. Those prices in Australia are:
- iPhone 13 Mini – from AU$1199
- iPhone 13 – from $1519
- iPhone 13 Pro – from $1719
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – from $1849
Apple could start the iPhone 14 price slightly cheaper, or more expensive, to account for the potential new technologies and features. Only time will tell.
Tom’s Guide cites Phone Arena and The Sun British newspaper as sources claiming the iPhone 14 could be subject to a $100 price increase over the starting price of the iPhone 13.
It isn’t yet clear if the price increase could apply to just the ‘entry’ iPhone 14 model or if there will be a price rollout across the board. If true, it could mean the range-topping iPhone 14 Pro Max could start at $1,199 in Australia.
iPhone 14 Australia: Pre-order
The iPhone 14 is not yet available for pre-order in Australia. We expect it will be available to pre-order from Friday 16th of September, based on the unveiling date of Tuesday 13th of September.
The iPhone 14 should then be available for buying and shipping from Friday 23rd of September.
However, if the latest information that suggests the iPhone 14 will be unveiled on the 6th of September turns out to be true, they should be available to pre-order from the 9th of September, before going on sale on the 16th.
iPhone 14 Australia: Storage, power & battery life
If there’s one thing Apple knows how to do – besides design incredible-looking phones – it’s how to give them ridiculous amounts of power. The iPhone 13 series features Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, which can also be found in the lower-priced iPhone SE. Considering Apple updates the processor with each iPhone model, it’s safe to assume the iPhone 14 will arrive with yet more power.

However, Ming-Chi Kuo says only the two Pro models will receive this new, more powerful processor. This means the ‘standard’ iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max could end up getting the same A15 processor currently found in the iPhone 13. On the flip side, however, all iPhone 14 models are expected to arrive with 6GB of RAM which, for the standard iPhones at least, will mean an increase by 2GB.
Storage options are expected to remain the same as the current iPhone 13 lineup, meaning a starting option of 128GB and rising up to 1TB. Details regarding battery life are relatively thin on the ground, but considering the iPhone 13 series offered longer battery life than the iPhone 12 it replaced, we can safely assume the iPhone 14 will offer even greater battery life.
