Victor Wembanyama is a French basketball player who at just 18 years old, is being touted as the most coveted NBA draft in the world right now, according to ESPN. Wembanyama is incredibly tall, has incredibly long arms and has shown some incredible talent since playing in the LNB Pro A in France.

Victor Wembanyama is a French basketball player who was born on 4 January 2004 in Le Chesnay, France. His mother played basketball and began coaching him from a very young age. However, Victor played football as a youngster too, in the position of goalkeeper and also enjoyed practising judo.

Basketball was where he showed real talent, however, and he joined his local basketball club, Entente Le Chesnay Versailles, before joining the youth development system of LBA Pro A basketball club, Nanterre 92, when he was 10 years old.

Victor received offers from bigger basketball clubs, including from FC Barcelona Bàscquet and ASVEL (a French professional club based in Lyon), but his parents declined them on his behalf. Victor was eventually loaned to FC Barcelona in 2018 to participate in an under-14 tournament.

Upon returning to France following his loan spell, Victor Wembanyama began playing for Espoirs Nanterre in the LNB Espoirs league, which is for under-21s, for the 2019-20 season.

Victor’s professional debut came in October 2018, playing just 31 seconds for Nanterre 92 against Brescia in the annual EuroCup tournament. In doing so, he became the second-youngest player to play in the tournament at 15 years, nine months and 25 days old.

He made his LNB Pro A debut came in September 2020, playing for Nanterre. However, after being named Pro A Best Young Player of the 2020-21 season, he decided to leave the club.

ASVEL

After leaving Nanterre, Victor signed a three-year contract with ASVEL in the LNA Pro A league, and he made his EuroLeague debut (the top-tier European basketball club competition) playing just 3-minutes. A game against Le Portel in April saw Wembanyama achieve a career-high 25 points.

Victor Wembanyama finished the 2021-22 season being named LNB Pro A Best Young Player for a second consecutive season. Wembanyama then suffered an injury which saw him miss the playoffs, and at the end of the season, Victor opted out of his contract.

Metropolitans 92

Shortly after opting out of his ASVEL contract, Victor Wembanyama signed a two-year contract with Metropolitans 92 in the Pro A league.

Future Prospects

Victor Wembanyama is widely regarded as being the No. 1 draft prospect for the 2023 NBA season. According to ESPN, Victor Wembanayma has “wowed NBA executives for the better part of three years with his exceptional combination of fluidity, perimer skill, shot-blocking instincts and feel for the game.”

Part of Victor’s appeal is his 7-9 wingspan and 9-7 standing reach, making him ideal for blocking shots and scoring rebounds.

Victor Wembanyama’s mother played basketball and his father is a former long jumper. Sport clearly runs in the family as is his sister Eve (who is much shorter than Victor) also plays basketball, albeit unprofressionally, but she did help her France national team with a gold medal at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Women’s European Championship.”
